Millington, TN (March 13,
2014) Memphis International Raceway™ (MIR), in conjunction with
Racers of Memphis, is pleased to announce a program designed to move illegal
street racing to a safe and controlled environment. In an effort to minimize and
discourage the local street racing scene, Street Warz of Memphis will take place
monthly with Friday, March 14, 2014 as the first of seven events scheduled.
"Safety is the number one
priority when it comes to racing, and in working with the Racers of Memphis, we
feel we have put together a program that does just that - keeps racing off the
street and brings it to the track," said Pam Kendrick, General Manager at MIR.
The program is designed for
racers with street cars and motorcycles, and each vehicle will need to pass a
safety inspection prior to racing. The event is formatted to mimic what many
racers have experienced while dueling on the streets and highways in and around
Memphis. With racing to the quarter mile on MIR's drag strip, the event does not
include use of the tree, a water box and scoreboards; racers will use the
familiar arm drop start. One benefit racers don't receive while street racing is
MIR's on-site emergency services and rescue team.
"MIR prides itself on
providing the best racing conditions and never compromises on safety. There is
not an event run on our quarter-mile, championship drag strip without the proper
safety equipment and personnel available," noted Kendrick. "If the track can
provide a safe and controlled atmosphere for these racers to do what they are
currently doing on the streets, it is a win for everyone. The streets are safer
