Report from NMCA WEST Races at the Historic Pomona Raceway

NMCA WEST Races at the Historic Pomona Raceway

on May 15-18, 2014

The NMCA WEST held a great event at the Auto Club Raceway in Pomona in spite of record heat and poor air quality reports by the news media due to neighboring fires. The response from racers was overwhelmingly positive, as the track surface was fast and ideal for running quick ETs. The facilities were, of course, second to none and the fans were treated to a great weekend of automotive excitement by the "World's Fastest Street Cars!"  Special thanks to our title sponsor, Nitto Tire.

The 3rd Annual Nitto Tire NMCA WEST Street Car Nationals included some of the best and the brightest stars from all over the country. Susan Roush McClenaghan made the trek to Pomona from Michigan and qualified second in the Currie Enterprises Open Comp class in her propane-powered 2010 Mustang. Donnie Bowles came all the way from Kentucky to race in Open Comp and the Granatelli Motor Sports Mustang Madness class, where he took home a Wally by beating Greg Dreher in the finals. Scott Oksas laid down a fast 6.04 ET at 253.56 mph to take the top qualifying spot in Garrett Turbochargers Pro Mod with John Mihovetz right behind him at 6.100 ET and 244.25 mph. It was a super quick field with the top five qualifiers reaching more than 220 mph at the famed quarter mile. Andrew Berry from Paso Robles claimed the weekend's bragging rights and the Aerospace Components NHRA Unleashed Wally after a battle against Mihovetz in the final round on Sunday. The car show at Pomona was filled with amazing rides all weekend, and they all deserved to be trophy winners. From a beautiful 1939 Woody owned by Richard Comstock of Bradbury, CA to a unique 1963 Studebaker owned by Bob Carlberg from Rialto, both Saturday and Sunday had something for everyone to enjoy. Editors, journalists and photographers from all over the Los Angeles and San Bernardino areas were out in force. They provided outstanding editorial coverage that reached millions of automotive enthusiasts in the weeks following the event. Here are just a few examples:

On Saturday, in the manufacturers' midway, we conducted a digital marketing survey using three iPads loaded with a questionnaire customized for the Pomona event. The results are as follows:

  • Spectators - 61%
  • Have attended previous events - 38%
  • Listened to Jack FM radio (which included event advertising) - 37%
  • Own a muscle car - 41%
  • Own a truck, SUV or crossover - 39%
  • Plan on purchasing aftermarket parts in the next 12 months - 54%
  • Age 25-54 - 51%

Thank you for being a part of the NMCA WEST! We greatly appreciate your support and recognize, year after year, that your support provides a significant contribution to our success. We're proud to be the #1 all-domestic motorsports show on the west coast and we're looking forward to our upcoming events in Fontana and Las Vegas.
