Heartthrob Exhaust and owner John Forbes have recently been awarded the 2012 W.O. Lawton Business Leadership Award for outstanding business leadership in the community, presented by the National Association of Workforce Boards, their highest national award.  The Workforce Protégé Program was developed by John Forbes and implemented initially through a pilot program at Heartthrob Exhaust, and has since spread through other local chamber business, and also through small businesses in 11 counties in central MN.
The program offers high school students a mentorship program where small business owners mentor at risk youth and provide on the job training.  The private business contributes the wages for the student/worker, along with work/life mentorship, guidance and specific goal setting, and public workforce funds are leveraged to contribute to unemployment and workers compensation insurance.
Too often programs with public funding can tend to have money thrown at a problem, with little accountability, and hard to track results.  This program asks small business not only to contribute time, life experience, and mentorship time from someone with a lot of hands on work experience, but small businesses also have skin in the game concerning paid wages to the protégé.  The protégé learns hands on from someone with success and measurable accomplishments and achievements in their life and can take these lessons learned to apply to improving their own life.
The opportunities afforded to local youth are already coming to fruition.  One particular success story is Zack Wright.  Zack originally started on the packaging line at Heartthrob Exhaust.  He was struggling in school and his prospects for graduation were dim.  He has advanced greatly and is now charged with doing highly technical design and prototype work on specialty products primarily in Heartthrob Exhaust’s industrial silencer division.  Through hard work, sacrifice, and help from Heartthrob Exhaust and John Forbes in setting and achieving goals, Zack graduated from high school spring of 2012, and will be attending a regional college to study diesel mechanics.  His leadership skills have blossomed greatly, as has his self-confidence.  He will continue working at Heartthrob Exhaust part time as he pursues his goal of becoming a diesel mechanic.
