Get Ready for the Frog Follies
Evansville, Indiana is the home of one of the biggest and most-loved muscle car events in the Midwest. Frog Follies happens every August at the Vanderburgh County 4-H Center just north of the city in charming Darmstadt, Indiana. The event lasts for three days, beginning on Friday morning and closing down on Sunday afternoon. Muscle car enthusiasts come from all over the United States to show off their ride and check out the other entries in the show.
What Is Frog Follies?
Frog Follies came about in 1975. Since then, attendance has swelled. To participate in the show, rods must be manufactured prior to 1949. This keeps the newer cars from edging out the old classics and stealing the limelight, since there are plenty of other events that cater to the newer guys. However, spectators bring their babies, too, so if you are into the newer models, you can find plenty of those in the parking areas.
How Can I Enter My Car?
If you own a muscle car and you want to show her off, Frog Follies is the place to be. Pre-entry is only $15.00 and includes a Frog Follies t-shirt with a cool retro design. However, you have to get your entry in before the 1st of July. If you want to enter at the gate, that's fine, too. Your entry fee is $20.00 and doesn't include a shirt. However, it's well worth it to be able to participate and show off your baby and all your hard work, sweat and tears.
Is It Just for Gearheads?
If you go to Frog Follies, be prepared to do more than just drool over the shiny chrome and highly polished paint jobs. There are food vendors bringing the best of Indiana for your taste buds. Keep in mind that there is a large German population in this area, so you will have the opportunity to try a lot of ethnic foods that you can't get anywhere else. There are also hundreds of vendors selling everything you can imagine that will appeal to your gear-head tastes. From garage signs to automotive branded clothing, and from car-themed housewares to real car parts and accessories, you can find it all at Frog Follies. They also have a section for local crafts, so make sure you hit the ATM before you arrive, as some vendors may not accept your plastic payment.
Where Is Frog Follies?
So, how do you get there? The 4-H Center is just four miles north of Evansville Regional Airport on the north edge of the city, and just about six miles south of Interstate 64. Evansville is also easily accessible from Interstate 69. Visitors coming in from this direction should take I-69 to I-64, and then head west to U.S.. 41. Once you get to the 4-H Center, you'll head west on Boonville-New Harmony Road to the first entrance for the fairgrounds. The entrance and parking areas are clearly marked, and plenty of volunteers are on hand to help you get where you want to go.
Frog Follies admission for spectators is very affordable. The price is just $5.00 per person. In 2013, there aren't many things you can still get for $5.00. With your admission fee, you get all-day access to all the exhibits, special shows and vendors. The gates open for spectators at 8:00 a.m. all three days. On Friday and Saturday, gates close for the day at 4:00 p.m. Sunday sees an earlier closing time at 2:00 p.m. And remember that unlike much of the State of Indiana, Evansville is on central time, so you'll want to adjust your times accordingly if you are coming from the eastern time zone.
If you can't make it to Evansville for Frog Follies this year, put it on your bucket list for later. You can also tune into Velocity on DirecTV and see plenty of coverage of the event.
